Kigali in 1 Minute: Africa's Cleanest, Safest Nomad City

Last updated · 1 min read

Kigali — Rwanda

Kigali is spotless, safe and quietly building the best nomad infrastructure in East Africa. Hills, cool weather, English everywhere and one of the fastest visa processes on the continent.

Where to base yourself

Kiyovu and Kacyiru are the nomad picks — leafy, walkable and close to cafés and coworking.

Nyarutarama is the newer, greener zone with modern apartments and easy airport access.

Safety, visas, cost

Kigali is one of the safest capitals in Africa — solo travellers, including women, walk at night without issue.

Fiber is available in most modern buildings at 50–200 Mbps. Coworking spaces (Norrsken House, Impact Hub) are excellent.

Most passports get a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable in-country; Rwanda also offers a longer-stay work permit.

A comfortable nomad month runs $1,100–1,600 including a modern one-bedroom in Kiyovu, groceries and eating out often.

One thing nobody tells you

Last Saturday of every month is Umuganda — 3 hours of national community clean-up. Traffic stops and shops shut until noon.

Plan this trip

If Kigali made the shortlist, the rest is logistics. Most nomads we hear from start by comparing flights into the closest hub, then lock in a base — a serviced apartment or hotel for the first week buys time to scout neighborhoods without overcommitting. Land with data already working by setting up an eSIM before boarding, and book an airport transfer so the first hour in town is calm instead of chaotic.

Once you're in, the city opens up faster with a little planning. We use Klook for guided tours and day trips, Tiqets for skip-the-line museum and attraction tickets, and KKday for the more local experiences the big platforms miss. A self-paced audio walking tour is the cheapest way to learn a neighborhood on day one. Travelling carry-on only? Drop your bags at a verified luggage locker between check-out and your evening flight. And because long stays mean real risk, we don't leave home without proper travel insurance — and we keep AirHelp bookmarked for the day a flight gets delayed or cancelled.
